Urfael

Help that lives with you.

We make friendly AI that stays on your side. Today that means an open-source assistant that runs on your own computer. Next, we’re starting work on Uru, a soft, cheerful helper for the home.

The assistant is free and open source (MIT). Uru is at the research stage and is not a medical device.

Urfael Assistant

A personal AI that runs on your own machine. It listens and speaks with local voice, keeps a searchable archive of your conversations, sets reminders and scheduled jobs, and helps you code with checkpoints you can roll back.

Uru

A soft, friendly robot we want to build for the home. Something warm to say good morning to, a gentle nudge for the routines you choose, and an easy way to reach the people you love. It’s an idea we’re working on, not a product.

Why ᚢ

Our mark is ᚢ, Uruz, a rune from the Elder Futhark. It is often read as strength, health and vitality. We took it as a brief: make AI that leaves people a little stronger and a little better looked after.

We started with software, because that’s where trust is earned. The assistant lives on your machine, works for you, starts in its safest setting, and says plainly what hasn’t been tested yet.

Uru carries the same rules into a body, for the place where help matters most: home.

What we hold to

  • On your side.

Our AI works for the person it lives with. The assistant runs on your hardware, under your settings.

  • Locked down by default.

The safest setting comes first. Your archive and memory stay on your machine, and your messages go to the model you choose. You decide what to open up, and we tell you what each choice means.

  • Honest about limits.

We publish what’s lightly tested right next to what works. If we don’t know yet, we say so.

  • Gentle by design.

Soft words, soft shapes, no pressure. Help should feel like a kind neighbor, not a sales pitch.

  • Open to inspection.

The assistant is open source under the MIT license. Anyone can read the code, run the tests and tell us where we’re wrong.

Built in the open

The assistant’s code, tests and threat model are public on GitHub. Read them, run them, and open an issue when something’s off. A clear bug report is one of the kindest things you can send us.

Come along for the build

Star the project on GitHub to follow releases, or write to us. We’d especially like to hear from people who give care, people who receive it, and people who build robots.
